To be a better coffee taster, taste a lot of coffee and take good notes.
Pick a brew tool you are comfortable with; I recommend a single-cup brewer like the AeroPress or a Melitta filter brewer. Make a cup and jot your impressions while the cup is hot, cool, and room temperature. While the cup cools, draw a sketch of the tools you are using and illustrate the technique.
Brew another cup, and change one element of the brew. Maybe change the grind size or try water 10 degrees colder. This is where high school math and science become relevant- you get to hold your own caffeinated science fair to become a stronger coffee brewer & taster.
Try a few rounds of small changes. Take good notes.
